The Directorate of Family Welfare Services, Government of Manipur, under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, was established in the year 1890. Its Primary objectives is to stabilize the population by providing comprehensive health services, particularly emphasizing immunization, ensuring well-being of expectant mothers and children.
Key initiative of this department involves encouraging the voluntary adoption of smaller family sizes. The broader objectives of the Family Welfare program include the following:
Mortality
Reduce Under Five Mortality to 23 by 2025
Reduce infant mortality rate to 28 by 2019.
Reduce neo-natal mortality to 16 and still birth rate to “single digit” by 2025.
Immunization Coverage: 90% full immunization by 2025 (0 - 1 year).
Enhancing Couple Protection: The aim is to raise the couple protection rate from 43.3% (in 1990) to a higher percentage of 60%, indicating increased accessibility and acceptance of various family planning commodities.
Reducing Family Size: A target is set to decrease the average family size from 4.2 (in 1990) to 2.3. Achieving this reduction indicates successful advocacy for and adoption of smaller family units, often linked to improved health and socio-economic benefits. Reduction of TFR to 2.1 at national and sub-national level by 2025.
Mitigating Infant Mortality: The objective is to bring down the infant mortality rate from 79 (in 1992) to less than 60 per 1000 live births. This reduction is crucial, signaling advancements in healthcare and well-being for infants and mothers.
These goals emphasize the comprehensive approach and dedication of the Family Welfare Program in Manipur, aiming not just at quantitative changes but also at improving the quality of life for families and communities through accessible and qualitative healthcare interventions.
